Aviculture is a hobby popular all over the world. Just ten years ago we would say that the largest collections with rarest parrot species are found in Europe, USA or Australia. However, in the past couple of years aviculture started developing rapidly also in other parts of the world. And India is a leader of all these countries. If you think that breeders in India keep only budgies, cockatiels or lovebirds then you are completely wrong. Palm Cockatoos, Red and Blue Lories, blue mutation of Plum-headed Parakeets, … all these parrots are found there.
In case you would like to see local collections and learn more about Indian aviculture then there is a must attend event for you – the 3rd ASI convention which takes place on 13th and 14th February in Bangalore. Both previous years have been visited by hundreds of breeders and speakers from Australia, Europe, or USA. When you look at the current schedule then it’s clear that this year won’t be any differrent. The president of Avian Society of India Anil Garg said exclusively for PDN that interest in this event is exceptional: “We expect about 250 people from all over the world to come. However, capacity of conference room is 300.”

Well-known Tony Silva from USA who speaks at this event every year will have two lectures on parrot breeding and hand rearing. In a short interview Tony recalled the first Indian convention: “The first ASI conference occurred three years ago. That first event was full of expectation on both sides: from the speakers, which included myself and Rafael Zamora of Loro Parque, and from those in attendance, who did not quite know what to expect.” “The event proved a success beyond imagination. We speakers learned of the advanced level and passion for aviculture in India and the Indian breeders learned the newest techniques in breeding and hand-rearing from us,” he added.
Loro Parque Foundación accepted invitation from Avian Society of India and send its representative Rafael Zamora to talk about preventive measures to avoid ilness on parrots.

This event will host also a representative from German ACTP Katrin Scholtyssek who is going to have a lecture on breeding of Spix’s Macaws and parrot conservation projects. We can’t forget about a very interesting lecture about breeding and keeping of Australian parrots from Barry Blanch who was also invited at Australian AVES convention in the last year and his talk received very positive response there. However, he is not the only Australian breeder who attends this event. The publisher of the Aviary Life magazine Simon Degenhard is going to speak at the convention as well.
Besides above mentioned names, the event will host also speakers from South Africa, Belgium, India and other countries.

ASI prepared a post tour for all speakers and foreign guests to show how the Indian aviculture has developed in the last couple of years.
“Most aviculturists across do not know much about aviculture in India which has evolved quite differently. We have been successful in rearing and breeding almost all species. The setups are amongst the best in the world. Through this tour we try and show the world what our status is,” said Garg.

As he added, their plan is to visit most interesting bird collections in India. “We are visiting my farm, a holy person SGS swamiji in mysore, visiting breeding large facilities MNJ sultan, CK Ranganathan and Balan sir in chennai. Then we visit tajmahal in Agra and finally Delhi to fly back home.”
The first year this event took place in Mumbai, the next year it was in Chennai and now Bangalore will host the convention. Anil Garg explains why: “We conduct the convention in different cities every year. Bangalore produces maximum number of veterinary doctors in India. Hence was ideal choice.”
