Which is the rarest cockatoo species in the world? Well, in Australia it may be Philipinne Cockatoo or Palm Cockatoo. But in Europe, it’s the Glossy Black Cockatoo for sure. Up to now just a single female in one private facility has been kept there. Legal imports of avifauna from Australia to Europe were very rare, more specifically almost impossible. However, yesterday this myth was broken when ACTP made the first legal import of Glossy Black Cockatoos to Europe.
Why is “Glossy” the rarest one?
All Australian Black Cockatoos like Yellow-tailed, White-tailed, Gang Gang and Red-tailed are very rare and expensive in European captivity. But there are a few breeders who have them and if you are patient and have enough money then it’s just a matter of time to buy them. However, there are no breeders of “Glossies”. Why is that?
Because hand rearing of this species requires much of experience. Firstly, these birds are food specialists and they feed only on Casuarina seeds in the wild. The second thing is that morphology of chicks crop is very different in comparison with other parrots and requires special formula consistency. Young chicks have also very thick down and it’s better to rear it not in the incubator but on a heating pad.

Anyway, we wish good luck to ACTP with their breeding and hopefully will bring you some updated info soon.
